TEACHER INDUCTION NTC REGIONAL TRAININGS

Regional Open Enrollment Trainings

The New Teacher Center at the University of California, Santa Cruz, in collaboration with partners across the country, provides a series of open enrollment professional development opportunities for educators who support beginning teachers. These trainings are offered regionally in Santa Cruz, California; Nassau County, New York; Yorktown Heights, New York; Westfield, Massachusetts; Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota; Memphis, Tennessee; Richmond, Virginia; and Waunakee, Wisconsin.

The menu of trainings allows educational organizations to support the growth of mentors, subject matter coaches, supervisors, cooperating teachers, principals, and coordinators of teacher induction programs by selecting specific trainings to meet their needs. (Download flyer.)

Menu of Trainings:

  • Introduction to Instructional Mentoring (two days) to support mentors in responding to each new teacher’s developmental and contextual needs and promote the ongoing examination of classroom practice. (Download flyer.)
  • Setting Professional Goals (one day) to deepen mentors’ understanding of the role of formative assessment through establishing focused goals, based on student standards and professional teaching standards. (Download flyer.)
  • Coaching and Observation Strategies for Working with Beginning Teachers (two days) to assist mentors in collecting and sharing classroom observation data aligned with professional teaching standards and to help new teachers improve instructional practice. (Download flyer.)
  • Analysis of  Student Work, Differentiation, and Lesson Planning (two days) to provide mentors with tools and strategies for helping beginning teachers identify student needs, plan for differentiated instruction, and ensure equitable learning outcomes. (Download flyer.)
  • Coaching in Complex Situations (one day) an advanced coaching training to support the mentors’ professional development to coach strategically and to find solutions to challenging situations. (Download flyer.)
  • Designing and Presenting Professional Development for Beginning Teachers (two days) to support mentors in bringing new teachers together for meaningful and responsive learning experiences based on principles of adult learning. (Download flyer.)
  • Mentoring for Equity (two days) to present mentors with a framework (one word) for coaching new teachers regarding inequities in issues of race, language, and culture. (Download flyer.)
  • Creating and Facilitating Meetings that Promote Mentor Development (one day) to provide a meeting design format and strategies to create collaborative environments for mentors to develop skills, gain knowledge, and problem-solve issues of mentoring. (Download flyer.)
