Continuum of Teacher Development
Teaching Practice and Professional Development
How do beginning teachers assess their professional development? How do they identify their strengths and areas for growth and make informed decisions about their practice? The Continuum describes teaching practice and professional development throughout a teacher’s career. It is aligned with professional teaching standards and is organized to describe five levels of development. The Continuum provides a common language for setting and discussing goals for professional development within an environment of collegial support. It is meant as a guide for self-reflection, assessment, and conversation among beginning teachers, mentor and site administrators.
The Continuum is organized around the following professional teaching standards:
Engaging and Supporting All Students in Learning
Creating and Maintaining an Effective Environment for Student Learning
Understanding and Organizing Subject Matter for Student Learning
Planning Instruction and Designing Learning Experiences for All Students
Assessing Student Learning
Developing as a professional educator
The Continuum has proven to be a powerful tool as beginning teachers identify their areas of growth, move from assistance to autonomy, and become lifelong learners. Cost is $8.00.
Using the Continuum of Teacher Development
A Guide to Working with Beginning Teachers
The ongoing and systematic measurement of a new teacher's professional growth can have significant effects upon a teacher's development and a mentor's ability to provide appropriate support. This step-by-step guide explains how mentors can best use the Continuum in collaboration with beginning teachers through a formative assessment process. It guides users through a year-long process of data collection, self-assessment, goal setting, mid-year review, and end-of-the-year reflection, designed to:
help beginning teachers and their mentors collaboratively assess teachers' level of proficiency
help beginning teachers set clear professional goals & guide mentors' support and assistance
provide a common language to describe and discuss practice
help new teachers become the educators they want to be
Using the Continuum of Teacher Development includes a complete copy of the Continuum as well as a convenient CD-ROM. The CD contains printable versions of the assessment tools as well as helpful video examples of mentor/teacher conversations.
