Local Policy Support

While implementing induction programs for teachers and administrators is an essential element of ensuring an effective, reflective, professional workforce, it is critical that all school district policies foster environments that allow new teachers and administrators to thrive. The New Teacher Center works closely with school districts, teacher unions, and locally-based organizations to create and align local policies that support teacher and administrator development, both within and outside of an induction context.

NTC's support for local policy endeavors include:

  • Developing principal and teacher evaluation systems linked to professional standards
  • Aligning professional development initiatives and funding sources
  • Collecting data that will inform program implementation
  • Designing rubrics and support documents for mentor selection
  • Establishing professional learning communities in schools
  • Creating teacher leadership opportunities
  • Training mentoring program leaders in administration and leadership

USE FEDERAL STIMULUS FUNDING TO PROMOTE NEW TEACHER EFFECTIVENESS

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) includes a focus on innovative school reform, teacher effectiveness, and meaningful interventions in the lowest-performing schools. High-quality mentoring and induction—coupled with coaching-based supervision and the development of strong professional learning communities—have proven to be powerful strategies in supporting significant growth in some of our nation’s most challenging schools and districts. Due to our deep experience in human capital development, the NTC is in a unique position to help states, districts, and schools implement these effective educator practices.
