RESEARCH Induction Survey

Teacher Induction Survey

The NTC Induction Survey provides a simple, rapid, formative assessment of your induction program. Completed on line, the Induction Survey enables program administrators to generate colorful, lively reports that reflect the responses of beginning teachers, mentors, and school principals to questions, both scaled and open-ended, about new teacher support. The information can be used in annual program reports and to direct professional development to the needs of beginning teachers and mentors. In 2006, the NTC administered the Induction Survey to more than 10,300 participants in 500 school districts located in 13 states across the country.

Survey Content

Beginning teachers, mentors and site administrators respond to surveys that consist of three parts:

  • Demographics (e.g., ethnicity/race/gender; credential status; grade level; subject area; years teaching)
  • Scaled items that address perspectives on content and value of program elements (e.g. how often you meet with mentor and engage in mentoring activities; how the program has improved your instruction; which program elements need more emphasis; how effective a mentor feels in specific skills)
  • Questions that invite open-ended responses (e.g., What are the most valuable aspects of your support program? At your site, what are the most challenging working conditions?)

Program administrators may wish to make some additions. These can be negotiated at additional cost. Deletions are free.

Excerpt from an Induction Survey Report

What are the most valuable features of your support program? Why?

I am very thankful to be a part of such an amazing program. It has been invaluable in my development and success. I believe these types of programs are imperative in both recruiting and retaining people in this profession. —Beginning Teacher

My mentor has made me feel that I am a strong teacher and am doing a good job in supporting and meeting the needs of my students. Having an experienced teacher to turn to and one whose number one job is supporting me in my needs during this highly stressful and exciting time is crucial. —Beginning Teacher

In what ways could your support program be improved? What I would like more of is consistent time with my mentor as far as planning time. But I appreciate any time I have with her! If her schedule gets too full, then I’ll feel defensive of the precious time I have with her! —Beginning Teacher
