As school districts work to develop programs to train and retain the finest new teachers in the profession, the New Teacher Center (NTC) at the University of California, Santa Cruz, prepares to convene its seventh year of Induction Institutes at the Aptos Seascape Resort overlooking Monterey Bay. And, this July, Induction Institutes will be hosted for a first time in Houston, Texas, and St. Charles, Illinois.

The four-day Induction Institute is designed for educators responsible for developing and implementing policies and programs that support beginning teachers and for those who oversee and conduct professional development for mentors who work with beginning teachers.

Educators participating in the Institute apply in local teams of three to six members that include mentor program coordinators, staff developers, curriculum/instruction and human resource administrators, superintendents and assistant superintendents, site administrators, mentor teacher leaders, trainers of mentors and beginning teachers, union leaders, and university faculty.

Based upon the highly successful principles and practices of the NTC Induction Model, the institute program helps participant teams build their capacity to develop and implement an intensive, classroom-instruction based model of beginning teacher support. All participants receive a trainer manual for a two-day foundational mentor training that supports local induction program implementation as well as the development of beginning mentor skills and strategies. With the assistance of institute staff, a wide variety of reference materials, and structured time dedicated to team planning, teams develop a unique plan for application to their local context.

By institute’s close, participants will achieve the following outcomes:

  • build local leadership capacity to create and implement an intensive, instructional practice focused model of new teacher induction
  • examine the context of induction and its role in professional/educational reform
  • develop knowledge and skills around mentoring best practices
  • learn the fundamental components of an integrated system of formative assessment
  • understand how to create effective professional growth environments for beginning teachers and mentors
