TEACHER INDUCTION
e-Mentoring for Student Success (eMSS)
In October 2002 the National Science Foundation awarded a five-year grant to the National Science Teachers Association (Gerald Wheeler, Principal Investigator), the New Teacher Center at the University of California Santa Cruz (Ellen Moir, co-Principal Investigator), and Montana State University's Science/Math Resource Center (Elisabeth Swanson, co-Principal Investigator) to develop the innovative e-Mentoring for Student Success (eMSS) project. For three years, the project piloted a model for e-mentoring for beginning secondary science teachers in school districts in California and Montana.
In 2007, the Goldman Sachs Foundation awarded the New Teacher Center at the University of California Santa Cruz a one-year grant to support for the development of a math pilot program, to support beginning math teachers across the nation. The program now includes ten states from across the country.

| eMSS-Science is designed to promote professional development through dialogue. eMSS-Science provides online mentoring for beginning science teachers by trained mentors who teach the same discipline. In addition, a facilitated online curriculum that focuses on science content and pedagogy that directly applies to the teacher's classroom is utilized to engage participants in dialogue. Additional benefits include access to scientists to deepen content understanding and leadership training for mentors and facilitators. |
eMSS-Math is a pilot program funded by a Goldman Sachs grant and was developed to empower the next generation of math teachers by providing content-focused mentoring through a national, online technology network. Through eMSS, new and veteran teachers, as well as working content experts, collaborate in an interactive community to facilitate the exchange of information, ideas, and experiences to advance high-quality math instruction for all students. |
